Everything makes something else possible.
It’s a phrase I come back to again and again. Not because it makes challenges disappear, but because it gives me a way to face them. Trusting that something else is possible is what keeps me from getting stuck. And resilience is what lets me move toward it.
The two belong together. Trust without resilience is like planting a seed and never watering it. Resilience without trust is like running a race without knowing why. But when they meet, they create motion, which results in momentum.
Pottery has taught me this. Every time the clay collapses or comes out of the kiln with cracks or other surprises, I have two choices: discard it, or re-center and begin again. Trust tells me the clay can still become something beautiful. Resilience is my hands steadying it back into shape.
The same is true in life. We trust that something new can emerge. We stay in motion long enough to see it take form.
So, the question really is always: What does this make possible?
Possibility Note
We often think resilience is a solo trait that is marked by grit, toughness, and endurance. But in reality, resilience thrives in connection and creation. When we’re isolated, we’re more likely to break. When we’re supported and trust that support, we have the capacity to not just recover but to create.
Everything makes something else possible.
Trust is where that begins. Not blind faith, but the quiet confidence that the next step is possible. Even if you can’t see it yet, resilience is what keeps you moving toward it, shaping and reshaping along the way.
These two traits go hand in hand. Trust provides the grounding, while resilience gives the motion. Without trust, resilience becomes a grinding effort. Without resilience, trust is just a wish. But together, they create momentum that reveals new possibilities.
Trust shows up in three distinct but connected ways:
Internal trust - Believing in your own capacity, judgment, and lived experience.
Relational trust - Knowing who you can lean on without fear of collapse. This also extends to a spiritual dimension.
System trust - Relying on the tools, routines, and principles you’ve built to hold you steady.
The reason trust is so important is that it means we have hope that is worth moving into faith, which leads to action. Resilience isn’t about snapping back to where you were. It’s about adapting and re-centering, like that clay in a potter’s hands. When the form collapses, the potter doesn’t discard it. She trusts the clay still holds potential. Her resilience is in steadying her hands and beginning again. Think of it as the reason we can take another first step as many times as needed.
Over time, trust deepens when our actions align with our values. When what we say we believe and what we actually do match, trust becomes not just something we extend to others, but something we can rest in ourselves.
And from that foundation, resilience becomes possible.
Life keeps asking us to hold trust and resilience together. To trust what could be, and to live resiliently enough to meet it when it comes.
An Insight from Cooper North
"I used to think resilience was about toughness—about never breaking. But what I’ve learned is that it’s really about trust. Trust that the breaking isn’t the end of the story. Trust that if I keep showing up, the next chapter will reveal itself. The truth is, everything I thought had undone me was actually remaking me. That’s resilience. Not clinging to what was, but trusting in what could be."
This Week’s Possibility Prompts: Trust and Resilience
What part of your life feels most fragile right now, and how might that fragility actually be the call for creative resilience?
Where have you trusted before and been surprised by what unfolded?
Since resilience isn’t “bouncing back,” what is it for you right now? Where can it take you?
Who or what gives you the steady hand when your own begins to shake?
What would you attempt if you trusted that every potential collapse could be reshaped into something new?
When you ask, “What does this make possible?” what answer do you most resist, and why?
Wrapping up:
Because I trust this, I keep going. Because I keep going, I discover more reason to trust.
Trust as belief is the seed. Resilience is the growth. And possibility is the harvest and proof that everything makes something else possible.
The magic they create together is momentum.
That’s it for this week!
Next week, we will be looking at the last two pillars of FACTOR: Awareness and Opportunity. Another pairing where each has more clarity when considered with the other.
As a preview to what we will be exploring:
The first opening to possibility is seeing it. That’s awareness. Of ourselves, others, potential. You can’t choose what you don’t see.
Not all opportunities are equal. We certainly know that. But each one does invite us to look again. With greater awareness. To notice what is emerging and not just what’s expected.
Awareness sharpens our perception of opportunities.
As always, thank you for reading. If you know of someone who would benefit from our conversations here, please forward them and recommend that they join us!
